Major League Gladiators is a 2-player co-op shooter in VR. The players take control of two classes, the Tank and the DPS, facing off against waves of enemies in an arena. Major League Gladiators attempts to use the immersive capabilities of Roomscale VR to create action packed combat as well as true cooperation between players. Players will have to attempt to survive as many waves of enemies as possible by synergistically using their abilities as well as keeping each other’s health and ammunition up. In Major League Gladiators we concentrate on the coop experience. We want the players to really play together. They attack together and they support each other. Lone wolves won’t survive!
The Team
In this project 6 artists, 4 programmers and 1 project manager/programmer were involved.
Technical Implementation
The game engine we used for this project is Unreal Engine 4. We focused on writing C++ code due to issues with version control (git) and blueprints. The target VR hardware is the HTC Vive.
Personal Contribution
I did the entire project management for Major League Gladiators. That includes controlling/focusing on goals, tracking goals/progress, communication with the whole team, providing and maintaining an infrastructure for the project (Favro/Trello, MediaWiki, Google Calendar, …), control regular important dates (concept talk, sprint planning/retro, …), be up-to-date what is going on in game dev industry, reacting to new ideas/things, …
Concerning software development, in this project I mainly did graphics programming (shader, in terms of Unreal Engine 4: materials). I worked on components to visualize damage feedback when hitting enemies or when the players themselves got hit. The visualization included material techniques and particle systems.
